Family Beginnings is an exclusive obstetrical program of Uniontown Hospital expressly devoted to the health and well being of expecting mothers and their families.
The goal of Family Beginnings is to help make the birthing experience a healthy and joyful event. To that end, we offer the talents of a highly skilled and dedicated staff, specially trained in the latest obstetrical procedures and techniques, and committed to providing you with the highest level of personalized care.
Family Beginnings offers state-of-the-art facilities, including private labor, delivery and recovery suites - all designed to make the birthing experience as safe and comfortable as possible.
"Uniontown Hospital is the only hospital in Fayette County that provides obstetrical services," explains Dr. Lawrence Glad, Director of Obstetrics. "And with more than 900 babies per year beginning their lives right here, we take great pride in bringing this warm, comforting, state-of-the-art birthing center to the community."
Labor, Delivery & Recovery Rooms (LDR's)
If you're like most moms-to-be, this is where it all begins. Our LDR's allow you to move through labor, delivery and recovery as comfortably as possible, all from one bed. Each LDR was designed to combine the coziness and warm ambiance of home with advanced monitoring capabilities for both mother and child both prior to and immediately following delivery.
If a cesarean section is necessary, the new Obstetrical Operating Room is just a few short steps away, immediately adjacent to the LDR's.
Family Waiting RoomThis area, located adjacent to the Labor Suite, is open 24 hours a day, and offers comfortable seating and television for families and friends awaiting the new arrival.
Holding NurseryOnce the baby has made its debut, the fully equipped LDR allows the newborn to remain with mom for a period of bonding. The baby is then temporarily moved to a five-bed Holding Nursery, where he or she is bathed, weighed, measured and medically evaluated before being returned to the mother, who will soon be moved to one of our postpartum rooms.
Postpartum RoomsOne of these 12 attractive rooms will become home away from home for both mother and baby for the remainder of their stay with us. At Uniontown Hospital, we believe that new babies should "room in" with their mothers to help establish the precious, early bonds that are so important in early development.
Level II Nursery
This area at Uniontown Hospital, licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, provides more intensive care for babies who may require respiratory assistance, nutritional support or more intense observation. According to Dr. Mani Balu, "This level of care allows us to continue the baby's care here, thus decreasing the need for a disruptive transfer to another hospital."
Staffed with certified lactation consultants, this service provides nursing moms with the care and counseling they need to effectively breastfeed their babies. "We added this important service because we encourage new mothers to breastfeed for at least the first year of life as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics," comments Bertha Sproul, Director of Patient Care Services. "Besides the proven health benefits it brings to the mother, we believe breastfeeding is the natural way to provide nature's most perfect nutrients to the baby."
Physician Lounge
The physician lounge is conveniently located in the Labor and Delivery Suite. It is equipped with comfortable furniture, a TV and sleeping facilities. This provides our physicians the opportunity to rest and relax while remaining immediately available to their patient during the labor and delivery process.
According to Dr. Glad, "The Family Beginnings Birthing Center was designed by medical professionals to be as responsive as possible to the very special and unique needs of mother, baby and family. Enhancing the birth experience in every way possible is our goal."
