Treating cancer with radiation therapy

If you are diagnosed with cancer, your doctor may recommend radiation therapy. This therapy may be used alone, or in conjunction with chemotherapy and/or surgery. It all depends on what type of cancer you have, where it is located and how advanced it is.

Radiation therapy uses radioactivity to kill cancer cells. It is used to help more than 50% of cancer patients.

Today, with the help of advanced technologies such as Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), radiation therapy is more accurate than ever. Doctors are now better able to target cancerous areas, and achieve less damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

At Uniontown Hospital, our board-certified radiation oncologists perform radiation therapy at the Robert E. Eberly Pavilion. Here, aided by advanced technologies such as IMRT and PET/CT scanners, cancer patients receive expert care that rivals that of any major metropolitan cancer center.
