Laparoscopy: Good News for Women

If you're a woman experiencing pelvic pain, your gynecologist may recommend a form of abdominal endoscopy called "laparoscopy." This test allows your physician to view your reproductive organs to check for any possible problems.

"In the past 10 years, new advances in technology, along with the use of video, have completely revolutionized our approach to surgery," comments Uniontown Ob/Gyn Dr. Lawrence Glad. "We are now able to remove scarring and adhesions, take out ovarian cysts, even perform a hysterectomy all through tiny incisions." Through these discreet incisions, which are made around the navel or at the pubic hair line, doctors can insert the scope, lasers or other instruments to perform the procedure. Dr. Glad also notes that Uniontown Hospital has all the newest equipment and the smallest scope technology that was once available only at major teaching hospitals. "Now we perform these surgeries on a weekly basis," he says. "They've actually become quite commonplace. Patients recover very quickly and in most cases can go home within 24 hours."

Conditions Which May Be Identified:
