Uncovering a Sneaky Disease: Who Should Be Screened for Diabetes?

For starters, anyone who has one or more of the warning signs or risk factors should see a doctor. For healthy adults, specialists recommend screening at age 45. For high-risk groups, screenings should begin at age 30.

The A1c Test is the tool of choice for determining if a person has diabetes. This blood test determines the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Levels outside of normal ranges can be an indication of diabetes.

Warning: Sometimes There is None

It’s no mystery why so many people who have diabetes are unaware of it. The disease often exhibits few or no symptoms. Here, however, are some telltale signs that diabetes may be lurking within you:

  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme hunger
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Sores that are slow to heal
Needless to say, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, a trip to your doctor is in order.
